Frequently Asked Questions

+ Who is HealthQb for?

HealthQb is for adults who want to improve their health and well-being and manage their chronic illness without the use of pharmeceuticals.

+ What is chronic disease & illness?

Chronic disease refers to the pathology of a specific condition based on a clinically-agreed and universal clasification. Diabetes, asthma and clinical depression are three examples. Each disease has its associated signature and symptoms.

According to Core Spirit, chronic illness is one's individual experience of their disease. They state that, "Your reality of living with your disease is defined by how you experience living with your condition, and this experience is mostly evident in your emotional and psychological life. Thus, the chronic illness experience can vary enormously between many individuals who have the same chronic disease."

HealthQb helps individuals with both chronic disease and chronic illness achieve better overall health and well-being.

+ How does HealthQb work?

Through a quantified holistic assessment, we help you discover the hidden causes of your chronic illness symptoms. We provide personalized interventions for which health behaviours you need to prioritize in order to continue your recovery. We help you measure your program through a wearable sensor and our app so that you can track your progress in real-time and know that you're on the right track. Learn more about how HealthQb works here.

+ What is the HealthQb Baseline Assessment?

After capturing 10 days of data using our wearable device and quantified well-being software™, we’ll provide you with personalized health areas to prioritize in order to improve your health and well-0being. These factors are based upon the BioPsychoSocial (BPS) model of illness and health (read more about the BioPsychoSocial model). From here, we will identify practitioners who can support you with your more challenging health routines and also recommend “at home” routines. We set targets for your nervous system so that you can see how it's responding in real-time.

+ What data are you capturing?

We capture biometric data while you sleep. The overnight data includes sleep, heart rate, blood oxygen. Please note that not all data is displayed in the app at this time. The HealthQb algorithms use this data to calculate your heart rate variability (HRV).

+ What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is our heart’s ability to change the rate at which it pumps blood in beats per minute based on our constantly changing state of being. It significantly impacts how our body can react to and recover from stressful situations.

HRV is a non-invasive measurement of our Autonomic Nervous System. So whether our body enters a “fight or flight” response during a high-stress situation, or it begins to “rest and digest” when the threat has disappeared, these changes are reflected in our HRV.

+ Why do we measure Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?

Heart Rate Variability is a measure of an individual's Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) status. By measuring HRV every night, you get a good indication of how your ANS behaves and how resilient it is in relation to managing life's daily stressors.

+ What is the Autonomic Nervous System?

The Autonomic Nervous System, or ANS for short, regulates our automatic bodily functions, such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, temperature, and more. It is constantly making adjustments to these functions based on information it receives from the brain and central nervous system.

With advances in the technology of wearable devices, we now have the ability to objectively measure the ANS. Through Heart Rate Variability, we can determine if a person is in more of a “flight or flight” state, or a “rest and digest” state and make educated guesses about the resilience of their nervous system.

+ How do I get started?

You can get started on your own by sending us an email. If you are already working with a healthcare provider, ask them if they are participating in our program so that they can support your recovery journey.

+ What is the wearable device?

We use a clinical-level pulse oximeter from our wearable partner Biostrap to capture overnight biometric data. The wristband is comfortable, minimal and sleek. Learn more about ongoing wearables research here.
